HHMI Undergraduate Research Studio

Undergraduate research in a studio environment exploring the boundaries of disciplines from
nanoscience to engineering

In 2007, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) awarded $1.5 million to scientists in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas to implement a program that will draw more minorities, women, and those students who might not consider careers in science into studies in the sciences.

Fulbright College faculty members will create specialized teams, pairing upto six freshman students with researchers who will combine their expertise in physics, chemistry and biological sciences to study scientific problems from various perspectives.

Interested freshman students should contact the program director early in the fall semester.

So what happens if I am selected?

If you are selected, you will be placed in a small group of six students. You will be with this group for four semesters and one summer. During the summer you will receive a scholarship and living expenses.

So what classes do I sign up for?

HHMI starts in the spring. If you are selected, registration will be done for you during the fall semester. Completing the two-year studio carries credit for two semesters of freshman chemistry lab, two semesters of physics lab, quantitative analysis lab and biology lab.
